Summary
This is my personal dictionary of the English words in the Lord of the Rings. My goal is to have every word in the Lord of the Rings defined according to how Tolkien used it, not necessarily how it is (or was) used in English in general.
This dictionary is a work in progress. It is updated at irregular intervals and not in any particular order. Essentially, as I work on my Conlang, I search through the text to see what words I need to invent, what distinctions I need to make, what concepts I can collapse together; and the results of those investigations get translated into definitions here.
Page Format
Each letter of the alphabet has its own page. Each page (while still in progress) has two sections: the defined words on top and the raw word list on the bottom. As I define words, they are moved from the bottom section to the top.
Entry Format
Word definitions are formatted as follows:
First comes the headword. The headword is the most basic form of the word: singular for nouns, bare stems for verbs, etc. Strictly speaking, not every headword will necessarily appear in the text, in cases were only inflected form are encountered. For example, although the text only contains the plural word adders and not the singular form adder, the word is listed in this dictionary under the headword adder.
The part of speech for a word is given in italics. If a word can be used in more than one part of speech, this dictionary will list them as separate words. For example, there are two entries for walk, one as a noun and the other as a verb. In such cases, the entries are ordered according to the alphabetical order of their parts of speech: walk noun comes before walk verb, since “noun” comes before “verb” in the alphabet, despite the fact that the nominal meaning is clearly derived from the verbal meaning.
Inflectional forms used in the text are given between parentheses ( ). Only inflected forms that actually appear in the text are included. If a noun is only ever used in the singular, the plural will not be listed. Furthermore, I include all inflected forms. Many dictionaries do not include regular, predictable inflected forms; but this dictionary does.
Next comes one or more definitions. To the best of my ability, I am trying to define words as they can be related to the text, not to how they are used in general English, and not even to how Tolkien uses the same word in non-Legendarium texts.
Last comes any noteworthy expressions or idioms involving the word that should be noted.
