bathe noun 1. the act of bathing

bathe verb (pa. bathed, pr.prt. bathing) 1. to submerge in liquid, especially water, for cleaning, refreshment, or enjoyment; 2. to apply water to something for cleaning or relief

bear noun 1. a type of large, strong omnivorous mammal

beast noun (pl. beasts) 1. an animal, as distinct from one of the sentient races (Hobbit, Man, Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Troll); 2. a wild four-legged animal, as opposed to insect, fish, or bird; 3. a domesticated animal (e.g., dog, pony, horse, the Nazgûl’s flying steed). Note: While generally in English a person who behaves in a cruel or impolite manner can be called “a beast”, this use is not found in LotR.

beast of burden noun 1. a horse or pony used to carry baggage

beastly adjective 1. (of people) characterized by brutish or cruel behavior; 2. (of places) characterized as uncomfortable or uncivilized

bird noun (pl. birds, poss. bird’s) 1. a feathered animal capable of flight

birth noun 1. the occasion in which one is born

black adjective 1. the darkest color, the color of night; 2. with little or no hope

bleed verb (pr.prt. bleeding) 1. for blood to come out

blood noun 1. the red fluid inside the body (note: Troll-blood is described as ‘black’ in one passage); 2. familial lineage; 3. national or regional lineage; 4. a reddish color resembling the color of blood

blossom noun 1. generally used as a collective term for all the flowers of a tree or group of trees. A few cases could be naturally interpreted as an individual flower; but blossom is never used in the plural (unlike flower, which is), casting some doubt on that. Blossom is also never used of non-tree flowers.

blossom verb (pa. blossomed) 1. to bloom; used of trees and areas containing multiple trees, but never used for an individual flower or a grass-like flower

bread noun 1. a baked food made from wheat, water, yeast, and sometimes other ingredients; 2. sometimes used metaphorically for food in general

brick noun (pl. bricks) 1. a hard, rectangular block usually made of baked clay or mud; 2. used attributively to specify the material of which an object was constructed
